51st MEMBERS CHAMPIONSHIP 2014

REPORT By  MIKE MILLMAN
Rough seas outside the Breakwater forced boats in the British Conger Club Members Championship to make an early return to the Barbican on the first of the two-day event. Overnight the wind abated and by departure time on the Sunday morning the sea state had lessened considerably and boats were able to reach the deep water wrecks.

A total of 112 eels were caught of which nine exceeded the minimum weight of 40 lbs and were brought to the scales.

The Championship fish of 59 lbs 13 ozs was brought in by Guildford angler Chris Goddard who fished from Ian Holman’s Ace’s High.  Alec Clough of Chapel en Frith caught the second best eel of 47 lbs 5 ozs. This is the third time he has been runner up in the Championship.   It seems he is destined always to be the prince and never the king but he will be back next year in a further quest for the title.

Third place went to Joe Connolly who travelled down from Scotland to compete as he does every year.  His fish weighed 44 lbs 11 ozs.
