BCC MEMBERS BOAT FESTIVAL 2017

The 55th BRITISH CONGER CLUB MEMBERS CHAMPIONSHIP took place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July 2017 from the port of Plymouth.

Plymouth Charter boats "TAMESIS", "CRUSADER", "SEA ANGLER II" and "HAPPY DAYS" provided quality fishing for 32 of the club's members.

Weather forecasts in the week prior to the competition suggested that conditions on the first day would confine boats to fishing reef marks and a brisk North Westerly wind on the morning of the first day seemed to confirm this.  However - once at sea all concerns on the weather disappeared and skippers all agreed that wrecks could be fished on both days.  Mackerel were, once again, hard to find, but everyone knows the score on this nowadays and all anglers brought frozen bait with them.  This was supplemented with the capture of pouting and whiting on baited feathers.

The atmosphere on all of the boats was great, with many a "belly laugh" due to the quality of the banter.  In the end a total of 321 eels were caught, with only four these being bought to the scales.

The overall winner of the "HETTY EATHORNE TROPHY" was Peter Thatcher with an eel of 55lb 14oz, taken on Roy Strevens' "TAMESIS".  Runner up was Steve Dawe's eel of 51lb 4oz, while Allan Mason was delighted with his 3rd place eel of exactly 47lb.

The four weighed-in eels were sold at market and the proceeds from this donated to the RNLI.

Winner of the "REG QUEST MEMORIAL TROPHY" for most eels released was Andy Gouriet, who turned in a great performance to catch 29 eels over the two days.

The winning team was the "LUCKY VIRGINS" (2520 pts) and runners up were "TON-UP TUNAS" (1651 pts).

Top boat again went to Roy Strevens on "TAMESIS".

The daily optional pools for "biggest eel on the day" went to Peter Thatcher on Day 1 and Allan Mason on Day 2."
